When most people pass Greenwood Fire Station 92, they probably don’t notice the small garden to the right of the station where residents can plant flowers, vegetables, produce and other plants to share with the community.
The Greenwood Community Garden, 1190 West Fry Road, is almost hidden away from those driving down Fry Road. Unlike other entities under the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, there is no sign that says “Greenwood Community Garden.”
Instead, residents have to turn onto a small road right before the fire station and park in a gravel lot near the city’s limb drop off at the Fry Road Waste Management Facility, 1244 West Fry Road, then walk across a field under some high voltage power transmission lines to access the garden.
The community garden has been around for more than 20 years. It was started by a previous parks and recreation director, said Robert Taggert, today’s parks and recreation director.
There are 40, 20-by-20 foot garden plots that can be rented for a year, Taggert said. At the beginning of each year, there are always plot vacancies — and they fill up quickly, Taggart said.
The garden operates under the same policies and rules as other city parks, and is open from dawn to dusk, he said.
The garden is popular among Greenwood residents, and it is nice to have that for the community, Taggert said.
As for the garden’s future, the city is always looking for opportunities for expanding the garden, or maybe even adding another, Taggert said.
“We think they’re great,” he said. “It teaches people how to manage and grow produce and vegetables and kind of promotes healthy lifestyles as well.”
